Title: Staff Accountant
Reports To: Finance Manager
Location: Cambridge, MA
Classification: Full time salary (exempt)
Overall Responsibility
The Staff Accountant serves as the agency’s primary bookkeeper and works closely with the Finance Manager to ensure all financial transactions are properly accounted for on a daily basis. This position reports to the Finance Manager and works closely with the Director of Finance and Administration, HR Manager, Office Manager, and other Boston and Kenya-based staff.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Accounting:
- Perform in-house bookkeeping duties, including accounts payable and accounts receivable;
- Assist with the preparation of monthly financial reports for HQ and quarterly UNHCR reporting;
- Participate in preparation for assigned audit schedules and other materials required by agency auditors and support their fieldwork and follow up queries;
- Cross-train in other accounting functions, including Employee Travel Expense Reports approval in Zoho, monthly balance sheet accounts reconciliation, and payroll reporting and processing in General Ledger;
- Process credit card transactions and reconcile monthly statements;
- Maintain organizational filing systems for financial backup documentation;
- Help ensure proper fiscal controls are in place;
- Support team in ensuring compliance with International Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP);
- As needed, prepare transactions and support the management of online banking;
- Enhance existing system to account for financial transactions by making recommendations on the chart of accounts and other cost-tracking systems; and
- Further elaborate bookkeeping policies and procedures and maintain agency’s P&P manual.
Other duties as assigned.
Desired Skills and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business management, or other related field from an accredited university;
- 1-2 years’ experience with bookkeeping, preferably with a nonprofit organization;
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience applying Generally Accepted Accounting Principles required;
- Demonstrated experience and familiarity working with Quickbooks or Quickbooks Online strongly preferred;
- Experience in at least some of the following tools and systems currently in use: Google Drive, ApplicantStack, Zoho, Dropbox, Salesforce, and/or Bill.com;
- Strong communication, professional presence, personal initiative, and diplomatic inter-personal skills;
- Ability to remain highly organized with a strong attention to detail;
- Analytical, detail-oriented, of the highest integrity, and possessing sound judgment; and
- Commitment to RefugePoint’s mission.
