RefugePoint was founded in 2005 to provide lasting solutions for the world’s most vulnerable refugees. We work to fill the critical and unmet needs of people affected by war and conflict that have fallen through the net of humanitarian assistance, in particular women, children and urban refugees.

The primary responsibility of the Counselor is to provide mental health support to clients through individual and group counseling.

Core responsibilities and duties of the position are as follows:

  1. Provision of counseling services
  1. Attend to internal and external referrals for counseling support and determine who to enroll for counseling sessions
  2. Conduct tests for counseling clients prior to and after provision of counseling support using internal tracking tools
  3. Conduct counseling sessions to clients in the setting that is deemed most appropriate (individual or group counseling)
  4. Initiate and run support groups for clients to enhance their self- awareness, interpersonal relationship skills and integration
  5. In liaison with the Senior Counselor, initiate and run therapy groups for clients assessed to have PTSD or other psychological challenges common to them
  6. Organize and conduct life skills training for children and youth aged 13-24 years.
  7. Participate in case review panel and point out psychological aspects on cases being discussed
  1. Documentation and reporting:
  1. Maintain participants’ lists of clients in support and therapy groups
  2. File counseling pre and post test sheets
  3. Closely work with Senior Officer- Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting to capture clients’ data in a way that allows analysis and lesson learning
  4. Provide highlights to the Senior Counselor to facilitate preparation of comprehensive monthly program reports
  1. Collaboration and partnerships:
    1. Identify strategic partners for advancing psychological well-being of clients
    2. Represent RefugePoint at relevant forums as guided by the Senior Counselor
  1. Attend to any other duties assigned by the Senior Counselor.

Requirements:

  • Degree in Counseling studies and at least 1 year of counseling practice or Higher Diploma in counseling with  at least 3 years of counseling practice.
  • Good understanding of trauma and effective approaches for alleviating psychological pain.
  • Proven experience initiating and running counseling support groups.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).

Desirable qualifications

  • Prior experience working with vulnerable persons.
  • Experience training groups on life skills.
  • Prior experience using interpersonal process therapy for groups (IPT-G).
