Agency Overview: RefugePoint was founded in 2005 to provide lasting solutions for the world’s most at-risk refugees. We support those who have fled persecution, war and/or violence, in particular unaccompanied and other vulnerable children, women, survivors of violence and torture, refugees from LGBTIQ communities, and others. We work with those in need of basic human protections, struggling to survive with limited/no humanitarian assistance or social safety nets and who are often overlooked and forgotten.

Summary: As a Communications Associate, you’re creative, great at telling stories through different forms of media. You want to join a hard-working team with a mission to let the world know who RefugePoint is and why our work is so critical. You’re familiar with how to manage organizational social media and websites, how to write compelling content, and you have an eye for design. You’re comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, and you’re able to work collaboratively and problem-solve.

As a key member of the Development and Communications Team, you will provide social media and website management, design, reporting, storytelling, and administrative support to advance RefugePoint’s visibility, reputation, and relevance with multiple audiences. You will manage RefugePoint’s social media channels, support RefugePoint’s internal communications, work to improve systems, oversee key performance indicators to assess the effectiveness and reach of the marketing and communications strategy, and work closely with other members of the team to create and share stories, photos, and videos from clients and staff. You’ll report to the Senior Communications Manager.

This position is based in Cambridge, MA, though we are currently working remotely and exploring options of doing so on a more permanent basis. In addition, we offer a flexible work schedule with the opportunity to work a 4-day or 5-day workweek.

What You’ll Do:

Social Media

  • Manage and leverage organizational social media presence including creating and managing content across multiple social media platforms.
  • Analyze social media platform data to track and improve content reach, establish KPIs, and make incremental strategic changes to enhance engagement and reach.

 

Donor Communications:

  • Support the development and execution of overall mass donor communication messaging and strategy as well as all marketing materials, including external newsletters, frequent email campaigns, time-sensitive updates to supporters, and digital/print annual fundraising appeals, through MailChimp, and manage MailChimp lists/subscribers.
  • Create and manage all of RefugePoint’s print and digital collateral, including quarterly and annual reports.
  • In collaboration with the Senior Communications Manager, manage the development of language standards for specific audiences.
  • Take the lead in developing stories about RefugePoint, our issue areas, and our clients for effective use in marketing materials. This will involve working closely with staff members, clients, and the Communications Officer in Nairobi.
  • Manage Google Ads, track keywords and analytics, and update as needed to ensure consistent growth.

Website

  • Manage the RefugePoint website, including creating, updating, and managing content.
  • Manage Google Analytics, analyze site data to track and improve content reach, and report data back to the team quarterly.
  • Serve as direct marketing lead, including the production of materials, strategy, and tracking.
Internal Communications
  • Develop and execute all internal newsletters.
  • Support with the communications-related training of new Experts and other staff, and support the development and dissemination of standard operating procedures as needed.

 

External Communications

  • Support the Senior Communications Manager in developing the annual communications plan, writing press releases and talking points, etc.
  • Work with the team to develop the quarterly editorial calendar to determine content (such as blog posts, social media posts, website updates, and events), and reach out to staff and clients to gather the information needed to create the identified content.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop, update and promote the website and social media content.
  • Track, monitor, and report on goals and the performance of all RefugePoint online properties.
  • Design and execute the internal staff newsletter.
  • Create and manage all of RefugePoint’s print and digital collateral, including quarterly and annual reports.
  • Write and edit print and digital publications and stories as needed.
  • Assist with strategic marketing communications, including campaigns and events.
  • Work with the Development and Communications Team to execute online fundraising plans, including email, social media, and online advertising.
  • Liaise with our Experts deployed across Africa and the Middle East, as well as with our team in Nairobi to gather client and staff stories.
  • Occasional travel to Nairobi, Kenya, and the Cambridge, MA offices (assuming remote location) required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What we look for:

  • 2-3 years of relevant work experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, with an ability to write precisely and concisely for internal and external audiences.
  • Excellent editing skills.
  • Strong design skills.
  • This position must be available for occasional early morning meetings with colleagues around the globe (e.g. 8:00am ET).
  • Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) essential.
  • Proficiency with Buffer (or other social media management platforms), MailChimp, Google Analytics, and Canva.
  • Experience with website management (preferably WordPress, but also other content management systems).
  • Experience using Adobe Design Suite.
  • Photography and basic video production skills are needed. This will include basic video editing, adding captions to videos, uploading content to YouTube, helping to record staff.
  • Familiarity with Google Ads/Google Grants.
  • Proficiency with email metrics and list management.
  • Passion for social media and dedication to measurement-based performance.
  • Experience working in an international and multicultural work environment.
  • Proven ability to effectively manage projects including meeting tight deadlines.
  • Willingness to travel up to 10%
  • Strong knowledge and demonstrated use of social media to engage and deepen relationships with the media and public.
  • Commitment to portraying refugees in an empowering and positive light.
  • Experience working with at-risk populations is a plus.
  • Creative and thoughtful on how new media technologies can be used.

 

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Salary range is $45,000 - $55,000 and compensation will be commensurate with experience. Employee benefits include medical and dental insurance; life, accidental death and dismemberment, and short and long-term disability plans. The organization also provides a 401(k) plan and offers a 6% match to eligible employees after 1 year of continuous employment. RefugePoint offers 32 days of combined sick, personal, and vacation time per year in addition to 12 annual holidays.
